How to tune a guitar | Guitar Tuning Lesson

how to tune a guitar

In the last lesson you learnt that E-A-D-G-B-E is the Standard Tuning of the guitar, and in this lesson you will learn how to tune your guitar to that standard tuning.

While there are a number of ways to tune your guitar, using an electronic tuner being the easiest of them. However, I will still stress upon the need to learn to do it manually. It will benefit you a lot in the long run.

So, first way is obviously the manual one, which is also called the Fifth-fret method.

Fifth-fret method:

This method is called the fith-fret method because you use fifth fret to tune all strings, except one (there's always and exception😉).

So, here is the step by step method to tune your guitar manually:

1. Hold the 5th fret of the 6th or E string and match its pitch with the 5th string(A string). As shown in the figure.

2. Now in the similar manner hold the 5th fret of the 5th (or A) string and match its pitch to the 4th string.

3. Hold the 5th fret of the 4th string and match its pitch to the 3rd string.

4. Now, here comes the exception, for tuning 2nd string hold the 4th fret of the 3rd string and match its pitch to the 2nd string. The exception is because of the change in the thickness of the strings.

5. And lastly hold the 5th fret of the 2nd string and match its pitch to the 1st string.

Now, you have to understand that the fifth-fret method is based on the assumption that the 6th string is well tuned. That means you have to learn to tune just the 6th string on your own and then rest of it is relatively easy task.

Using E-tuner and Apps:

Well obviously the other method is to buy and electronic tuner and tune the strings with it, there are semi acoustic guitars out there too with built in guitar tuner (just as my Ashton D20).
But before that I used to tune my guitar using this awesome app called GuitarTuna, you can find it in play store following this link below:

There are so many apps out there to tune your guitar but I personally like its easy to use interface and clutter free near perfect experience.

But as I said earlier you should learn how to do it manually even after having so many easy ways to tune your guitar.

Keep practicing, and I will see you with another lesson on the major chords.
